What an odd holiday Halloween is. Really take a moment and think about it. We dress up and go around acting as something that were not. We even get little kids involved and dress them up and then go around asking for candy. What a weird holiday. At least we know that Hallmark did not create this one!
There are many things we do and dress up as on this special and ever fun holiday. Why is that as you grow older the holiday becomes more fun to dress up and see who can come up with the oddest or most original costume? I think there is a time when we say forget the candy and lets just dress up. Friday night I looked around and saw infants dressed up as lady bugs and little insects, then the elementary kids were sports players, movie stars, and I even saw slashers and prostitots.
Then you get into the teens and the costumes get a little more slutty, but then you look at college age adults and things just do not get better. I even saw someone with just a bandanna on and a ultra mini skirt. Has this holiday become the “how slutty can I get, and get away with it?” holiday? Or is it just my generation that thinks this.
Well then you have me for example, that has had many interesting costumes the past three years. Let us start with Halloween 2006. Let me give a little bit of background and credit due on this amazing costume. A good friend, Jacob Shamy, was enrolled in a makeup for stage class at BYU. He needed a model to perform on a test and I happened to be his model. His test fell on Halloween and he was testing on bald caps. His instructor stated that anyone who did a full face paint job could leave the room how they were. So we decided to make me into a Blue Man.
Now lets look at Halloween 2007. The background. Well, who knows what the thought and logic was behind this one. I just decided that my hair was a little long so I would do Dennis the Menace. It is just too bad that I ended up looking like a child predador. But the hunt for this costume was not easy. I ended up borrowing my bosses mom’s husbands overalls. So needless to say they were a little big on me.
Now onto Halloween 2008. By far the least amount of thought all thrown together in 30 minutes. Well technically it took an hour but the idea was formed 2.5 hours before the ward party a week before Halloween. So 2.5 hours before I called up Katie and asked what we were going to do for the party and she said, “I dunno, we could do gorry.?” So we went with it. We decided our story for the look was a motorcycle accident. I think all in all it worked out quite well. Katie happens to also be in a makeup for stage class so it worked out. Shelly, Katies roomate, also participated with us the night of Halloween. So we then were the three who wrecked on motorcycles.
So with the holiday over I can truly say that with my new found knowledge of makeup art I am going to love Halloween from now on. It no longer will be about the candy but about how creative I can get and non-traditional I can get.
This Halloween the most popular mask is the Arnold Schwarzenegger mask. And the best part? With a mouth full of candy you will sound just like him.
